Ravensburger fun facts!

  • A 1,000-piece Ravensburger puzzle has 1,008 pieces – Those extra eight pieces are essential to retain a rectangular shape.
  • You can eat a Ravensburger puzzle (but please don’t!) – Each one is made of 100% non-toxic materials, including water-based glues and inks.
  • The first Ravensburger puzzle was made in 1891 – It was a wooden map cut into contoured shapes for children to reassemble.
  • Ravensburger built a ONE-MILLION-PIECE puzzle – In 2008, the citizens of Ravensburg, Germany put together the world’s largest puzzle: exactly 1,131,800 pieces.
  • Ravensburger puzzles stay together without glue – The pieces interlock so precisely, you can lift up a completed puzzle by the corners and it stays in one piece.

Tips for puzzle building with kids

From simple shapes in wooden trays to thousands of jigsaw pieces, there’s a broad range of puzzles! Here are some hints for introducing this simple, satisfying and screen-free activity.

  • It’s okay if it’s easy! Especially for very young kids, the thrill of successfully completing a puzzle goes a long way. Starting with fewer pieces and simpler designs will help reinforce the shape- and colour-matching skills and will reduce frustration. Remember: it’s meant to be a FUN activity, not a test!
  • Make a game of simple puzzles. Grownups can “accidentally” spill the pieces and ask kids to “help” by putting it back together. Ask questions about the shapes and demonstrate how they fit together. As their confidence grows, see how quickly kids can do a favourite floor puzzle and celebrate those personal best times!
  • Introduce more complex puzzles with themes kids really love. Look for puzzles featuring favourite characters or subjects, like dinosaurs, puppies, or vehicles. Ask kids how they’d like to approach it: will you sort the straight edges and build the frame first? Sort by colour and build different characters? There’s no wrong answer!
  • Let kids circle back as their interest comes and goes. If you can dedicate a table to an ongoing puzzle project, great! Kids can work on it as the feeling moves them. Or, store your puzzle-in-progress and break it out an evening or two each week: not as a chore, but as an optional activity in a screen-free period when you’re listening to music or chatting. Praise their successes and take pics of those completed puzzles!
