I would suggest the trax expansion is not worth it when you think about how much more you get in the starter set. When the starter set comes down to $55, pound for pound it is a much better deal.

My 8year olds absolutely love this track. They never sit for very long with a toy but can spend hours working on this. They especially love the jump. Highly recommend. The only downfall is that you require quite a bit of expansion packs or 2 starter set to make something decent.

Fun toy!
My first impression of seeing the Gravitrax Starter Set was that it would be similar to the Discovery Toys Marbleworks, where you build a track and then let gravity pull a marble down through the track. Upon opening the box, I found that the building process is very different than I expected but the general concept was the same.
Inside the box you find six instruction booklets each with a different language, one task (suggested track layout) booklet, four cardboard base plates that each have 27 hexagons to punch out (4 x 27 = 108), two plastic hexagon level plates and an assortment of black and grey height tiles, white curve tiles, green special pieces, grey track and 6 marbles. All of the pieces are made out of plastic, with the exception of the marbles that are metal and the base that is cardboard.
The idea is to build a track to allow a marble to follow as gravity moves it along. There is a learning curve to building the tracks. Everything is built around hexagons. The height tiles and the curve tiles are hexagon shaped, so they fit into the hexagons that you punched out of the cardboard base plates. I appreciate that once you put the hexagon tiles onto the base plates, the tiles aren’t going to move. So if
the board gets bumped, the hexagons stay put. However, the track (straight pieces) don’t “lock” in nearly as well, so if the board gets bumped, you will probably have to reposition the track. They give you 24 pages of sample track layouts. It is a good idea to start with these to get an idea of how the track pieces fit together. This will also teach you how to do multi-layered tracks using the level plates. Learning to follow the task booklet requires good spatial reasoning skills and a little bit of
guesswork. Sometimes it is hard to tell which color riser to use (the black riser is half the height as the grey riser), since the grey and black color printed in the booklet are very, very close in color. Sometimes it is also hard to tell how many risers were used under the tiles. Once you build a few tracks, this gets
easier, because you can reason through what the layout is asking you to accomplish.
The set came with some interesting “special pieces”, these were my favorite:
- The starter piece is pretty neat, it can start up to 3 marbles at a time going in 3 separate directions.
- A magnetic cannon, if you end up with 3 marbles on one side, it will shoot the marble on the opposite side.
- A vortex, which is a funnel. This is fun once you understand how to use the level plates.
My child and I had a fun time building several tracks, both “easy” ones and “hard” ones, together. The longest it took to build a track was about 15 minutes. It took longer once we started trying to be creative and design our own track.
Clean up isn’t too bad. It would have been nice if the bags for the tiles, tracks and risers were resealable. I ended up getting a couple gallon sized ziplock bags to keep the pieces sorted for next time.
Cost wise, I feel like the Gravitrax started set is a good value. I might start using this as my go-to gift for all the birthday parties my child will get invited to this year, since I like giving gifts that are unique, educational and require thinking.
A few final pros and cons:
Pro
- Fun to build!
- Lots of suggested layouts.
- Requires critical thinking.
- Good activity for an elementary age student to do with a parent’s help.
Con
- Your building is restricted because of using the hexagon base.
- Learning to read the layouts in the task book takes patience and good spatial reasoning.
- Elementary age student won’t be able to do this on their own straight out of the box.
I received this toy in exchange for my honest opinion.
