Was in two minds whether to buy this but as there are no new Harry Potter sets coming out for a bit, wanted something to build in the meantime.
I wouldn't say this was the easiest set, thankfully all parts were in the box, nothing missing. It is quite repetitive in places. Quite fiddly. The instruction I think is what let it down. The drawings seem to skip bits. Found myself having to rebuild sections. The finished item looks good. The carriage moves when press keys - would be good if the arms moved when typing - not sure if they should and I have just gone wrong somewhere. Not the most exciting build but would recommend. Looks good when completed.

I was looking for a set that was going to challenge me and boy oh boy, did I find it with this set. Slight repetitiveness in the beginning when you're creating the key arms, but that's done with pretty quickly. The work involved with setting these key arms up is very involved and it can be easy to miss a step. Once you get past that part, it really starts coming together and looks fantastic! The fact that you can "type" with this kit is really nifty, and the mechanics for getting the carriage to move are really cool. TL;DR, if you're looking for a fun challenge, run, do not walk, to get this set!

Beautiful acquisition for writers
I didn't grow up with Legos, but I did get to play with them at family and friends' houses a couple of times. This machine was little bit difficult for me (I had to assemble, unassemble and reassemble it), because I forgot parts that were a bit hidden in the fold of the instruction book, or because certain parts were similar, and separating the pieces without damaging them was sort of difficult. While I didn't enjoy the process as much as I'd hoped, it's definitely a great acquisition. I really like how it looks; it has a beautiful mint colour, with red, gray and black details. It's ideal for those of us who love to write (but prefer to write by hand or on a computer, for practicality); it will appeal to those who like to display retro pieces in their spaces, and also, there is always a bit of pride when you have something handmade.
I love that the typewriter was created by a Lego fan, just as the rest of the Lego Ideas designs :)
Congratulations to Steve Guinness and all the team behind this typewriter. It turned out amazing n_n

I came back to building Lego two months ago after many decades not building. This has been my favorite build so far. I thought it was so cool the way it all came together, and it looks great on my shelf. However, you've got to be careful as you build, as it's very easy to miss or screw up a small step along the way. I made 2 small errors, but luckily caught them fairly quickly, as I checked routinely to be sure the mechanism was moving as it was supposed to do.

Looks amazing, but...
Purchased this set mostly because it's my favorite LEGO color and also because of how crazy cool it is that it's a typewriter created out of LEGO. I was extremely careful when putting this together as I wanted it to function as expected. However, it left me just a little disappointed. The carriage return slides, but after just a few clicks of the keys, it stops moving. Some of the keys you have to tap harder than others. I definitely don't want to take it apart to rebuild. Again this is a typewriter built from LEGO, so I certainly don't expect it to function exactly like a real typewriter. It is an amazing display piece and I enjoy it as it is!

A wonderful and nostalgic set
As an aspiring writer, I instantly fell in love with the vibe of this set. For the first time, my passion for writing and LEGO merged and I knew I had to have it. The sleek design was something that would look beautiful on my desk and it would let people instantly know what I was all about. After finally getting it and building it, I can honestly say that it’s one of the most unique sets I have ever put together. It was a little bit challenging, mainly due to the fact that I had never done a Technic build before (the instructions make it easy though, even for a rookie like me). The exterior is solid bricks but the inside is an intricately detailed and stunning series of moving parts. It was amazing playing with the final product and realizing that I built it with my own hands. So much love and care went into this idea, and I’m so happy it exists!

Great set, missing part
This is the first time I didn't have a part and it happened in Bag 1 with a fairly large Technics (13m beam) that was missing. I did have another smaller beam and plate so I think the weight of these extra parts matched the missing part so it passed Lego's stringent Quality Control checks. Fortunately, Lego has excellent customer support and I was able to order a replacement in a few minutes and it's on its way. I did dig out the same part from another build to proceed.
This is one of the most enjoyable builds from Lego. The mechanical design of this is amazing and while I had to redo the component build for all the key bars, overall it was a great build.
My only complaint is under the space bar the components keep wanting to break off even with light pressure so I am finding loose pieces under the space bar from time to time.
I really enjoy these realistic models and hope to see more Ideas sets like this in the future to model real-world everyday items with realistic mechanics and design.

Beautiful Set
Really lovely set. I am just getting into LEGO as an adult and I found this set a little more complex (I've done the Mustang, Stranger Things, Bonsai, Flowers, etc.). It has some repetitive parts as expected. Have to pay close attention while building the mechanism to ensure they move properly. I see reviews saying things fell off or didn't move or wouldn't fit. I never had any of those problems at all. Everything worked the first try and it's very sturdy as I have moved it several times already. I really like the silver metallic touches. Really cool classic look overall and would look great on a bookshelf or in your home office. I also saw a few reviews saying it doesn't take the paper/feed it through. It does. You load it in upside down through the back just like a real typewriter. I admit the instructions don't show this at all, but it definitely does take the paper and feed it through when you turn the knob. There were just a few spots where I think the instructions could be a little more clear, but overall you can easily and quickly catch your mistake if you misinterpret the diagram.

When I brought this, for myself, I felt elated because it represents everything about me. I learnt to type in school, and have fond memories of me and my best friend trying to beat our speed typing score with our perfectly manicured nails. Sad, but true!
Typing is a skill that once you have it, you can’t lose it; kind of like riding a bike. So seeing an old fashioned typewriter was a dream come true. One thing I didn’t expect was for me to love the build so much. It’s amazing!!
I say that for all of my builds, but this is on another level. I thought I would be building a shell of a typewriter, but no..Lego have taken it to another level, and I actually can say that I have build an actual working typewriter. To see the progression from shell to interior workings and outer case makes me actually feel like an inventor. Only that I didn’t invent the typewriter or the Lego typewriter, but I feel a valued member of the process. The exceptional touch with the red and black ribbon, the roller that goes back and forth, and finished with the paper that is supplied in a pad with multiple languages for you to chose to display in the finished product. Savouring the build like fine wine, it took me about 7 1/2 hours to build over a couple of days. This by far is my favourite of my ever growing LetMelLego collection.
Like that well know film where Neo says ‘I can do karate’ - I say ‘I can build a typewriter!’
Highly recommended.

I love the set, but the instructions are NOT clear, and this is very hard. Lego is supposed to be ALOT less hard. I'm sorry to say, but too much technic is like, "I accidentally got this to build!" Though mostly, I like it, but I'd a response from lego on this. I can't say I would recommend it.

A Mechanical Marvel
I can safely say that this is one of the most interesting Lego sets that I have had the pleasure to build. The mechanism of the keys and hammer left me giggling with joy as it all came together. My happiness doubled again as the sliding carriage began to take shape.
My favorite kind of art is the kind that you can physically interact with, and "typing" with the set is an absolute joy. My only caveat is that the initial setup of the key mechanism can be a bit tedious, and that it is easy for the key arms to get sticky from the friction, but I understand that it is necessary for the system to work as well as it does.
Overall, one of my favorites.

Excellent set
The set has excellent functionality for a LEGO build, one of the best I've seen outside of normal play sets. The build can be tricky at times and a little bit tedious, especially with regards to the keys, but overall it was a joy to build and the final product is fantastic both for display and to 'use' with great key functionality. Because of this set, I actually own a real typewriter now!

Thrilled to receive this set for my birthday. This has been the most challenging build I’ve created. Those tricky grey or is it black parts! Oh do read instructions carefully. I had to rebuild the mechanism 6 times! Thrilled with results, wonderful design, extras and mechanics! Well done Lego

Hi there. While this model doesn't have ink, you can still enjoy 'typing' on the keys, move the carriage and feed a real sheet of paper into the brick-built platen roller, just like a real one. - Henny, LEGO® Customer Service
