Unfortunately does not live up to Lego standards
I have built and played with Legos for 25 years. I do love the advanced builds. When I first saw the typewriter it took me back to when I was a kid. Also I thought it would be a challenging build and was looking forward to its functionality. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The overall look of the piece was disappointing as the bricks did not fit together tightly that resulted in gaps between the bricks. Also I’ve noticed in my last few builds the bricks have a small dent in the center of each making the overall appearance less appealing. It is wonderful that the step-by-step directions showing each piece and exactly where it goes makes this a good build for beginners. However I was looking forward to a more challenging build similar to some advanced technic builds. Functionally, I do like the look of the ribbon and that the cartridge moves, but the feeder does not push the paper through. I had to take a thin tool to manipulate the middle piece that allows the paper to feed. Even when I loosened or tightened the connection, the paper still got stuck and crinkled. I was also disappointed that the handle on the cartridge could not be used to move the cartridge from side to side. Making the handle sturdy would have added a great deal of playfulness. So for someone who loves the experience, look and the playfulness of Legos another set might be considered especially for the price.

Looks Great, Frustrating To Build
I have been waiting to buy this set since I first got into Lego a few years ago. The upscale look and functionality really made want this set. Usually when I get a "larger" set I am excited to put it together and usually get it done within a day. The Typewriter, thus far, has been my most frustrating builds to date. The way everything fits together for functionality leaves little room for error. A side note, that has been corrected by Lego was that 2 of the bags weren't properly sealed at the factory and spilled parts out all over the box.

Purchased the typewriter for the family to construct over the holidays. Halfway through, we discovered it was missing pieces and therefore we were unable to complete it. We ordered the replacement parts through Lego's website but were informed it would take up to two weeks just to ship them out. Needless to say, everyone was very disappointed with Lego's poor quality control and lack of prompt customer service to make things right. For a premium priced product we expected much better. In the future, we will certainly explore other brands/products for family entertainment before we even consider buying from Lego again.

I followed the instructions to a T, sometimes having to read ahead to check that I was putting parts in the correct place, because the drawings weren’t always fully clear. However, the carriage isn’t moving at all, and in turn the carriage return lever isn’t functional. Some keys are set at different heights, but that’s not a huge issue for me. I’m mostly just upset that the mechanism and movement I was expecting (because it’s mentioned in the description) isn’t happening.
Another thing to mention for others wanting to buy, you can’t write letters using this. The keys move when pressed, but it doesn’t contain ink or proper typebars. Just adding this in case anyone believes it’s fully functional.

Coolest, most complicated set I've ever made
The title of the review says it all. I've rediscovered my love of LEGO as an adult and have mostly gone through the space collection (Saturn V remains a favorite), and this has got to be the coolest build I've ever made. It's incredibly intricate - sometimes to the point where I'd make mistakes and have to start over on certain parts - but appropriately rewarding. So many "Aha!" moments when it started coming together. It's on my desk in my office now and it's definitely a conversation starter when people come by.
My only knock on this is that the spacebar instructions aren't very clear and I couldn't get it to attach at first without going off book. Other than that nitpick, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fun, complex build.

Watching her interest grow and participating here and there sparked my interest. So much so, that I've found assembling sets to be a great stress reliever. And THIS set did not disappoint. When building, doesn't always feel correct...ended up rebuilding a few steps along the way.

Can be improved.
I had the best time putting it together. The product and the mechanical designs are perfect but the actual execution may can use some evaluations. I realized that at the beginning when you put the arms together on the rods, the pieces that hold them in place can be hard to space. I noticed afterwards that if the spacing is not even, the keys don’t type properly. Then the carriage may just be a tidbit too heavy for the mechanism that carries it below (the spring and the rollers) because I heard it rubbing against the track. When I have a chance, I am going to ‘maintenance’ it to redo a few things to try to test my theories and see if it will get better.

Awful experience
I absolutely love legos and have been building them with my children over the past 17 years. The typewriter set is the worst set I have assembled during those 17 years. The instructions only show one angle so it's difficult to decipher where each piece goes. My poor children have assembled half of the set and had to disassemble and reassemble twice now. The thing that brings my family so much joy is now causing stress, tears, and frustration. For such a difficult set to assemble, you would think Lego would provide instructions that show different angles for a better view of what piece goes where. I'm literally about to throw this set away. Not worth the money or time.

Well this set is amazing, I have not bought a Lego set for myself in over 20 years as am always buying sets for my son. But when I saw this set I knew I had to get this. The build was as easy as anything and the level of detail is absolutely superb. Well done LEGO from a very happy customer.

Hi there. While this model doesn't have ink, you can still enjoy 'typing' on the keys, move the carriage and feed a real sheet of paper into the brick-built platen roller, just like a real one. - Henny, LEGO® Customer Service
