The pieces smell REALLY bad when you first open it so let it air out for a couple of hours. The pieces are sturdy and detailed. The price could be a bit lower though. The reason I got this is I didn't have a chess set of my own. My son loves the entire Mario crew and was so excited when we purchased this chess set. The character pieces are really cute with vibrant colors, making kids who might not normally be interested in chess, want to play/learn the game. The instructions are to the point and my 7 year old son caught on very quickly.
